Blondes To The Bridge

When I interviewed Grace Lee Whitney (Yeoman Rand) last year at the Vegas Con, she asked, "Where are all the blondes? She was, of course, referring to the lack of blondes in the 2009 Star Trek film. It got me thinking. The Original Series was full of flaxen-haired beauties in every department. From Nurse Chapel to a bevvy of captain's babes, Star Trek featured the finest toe heads this side of the galaxy. So has blonde fallen out of favor since the 60s? I bet, Kaley Cuoco (Big Bang Theory) and Anna Torv (Fringe), two successful, smart TV blondes, would beg to differ.

"Don't mess with blondes."
Unforgettable in my book.
In my mission to make myself Dehner, one of my selling points for the role is that I have blonde hair. While on the surface, blondes are relegated to what I call the bimbo-factor, many blondes use low expectations to get ahead. Marilyn Monroe and Jessica Simpson certainly made careers out of playing the "dumb blonde." One of the many things I love about Star Trek is that blondes don't have to play into the "Born Yesterday" stereotype. They can kick ass a' la Martha Landon in "The Apple." Even though she was a red shirt beaming down to a planet, she didn't die. Many of her male counterparts were not so fortunate. Sure, blondes on TOS also got their share of attention from the male crew. There was clearly a Nurse Chapel/Spock "thing" happening. I always wanted the Rand/Kirk "thing" to come to fruition. Romance aside, these ladies were breaking new ground in 60s TV. In fact, people forget there was a blonde on Star Trek before William Shatner even got there. Susan Oliver, anyone?
Recognize her without her Orion green?
So, why no blondes in JJ's Trek? Sure there was the mother of Kirk (played by Jennifer Morrison) and that one blonde in the background, but I want a blonde on the bridge like in the good ol' days. "Where No Man Has Gone Before" had two! In addition to Dehner, you had the young Yeoman Smith, who Kirk mistakenly calls "Jones" (played by Andrea Dromm). There's no reason JJ Abrams shouldn't have any number of blondes in the sequel. Certainly, Nurse Chapel deserves to be there, and I have everything to gain by it being Dehner. I hope it's both! Star Trek has had a long-standing history of strong women, not just blondes. Uhura definitely delivered in the JJ-verse. That's why I have faith that he and the writing team can create complex, flawed and compelling blonde-haired characters. Don't we deserve at least one? Heck, Ronald D. Moore, made a male character, Starbuck, a tough-as-nails female character on the re-vamped "Battlestar Galactica." And guess what? She was a blonde and people (eventually) accepted it and even liked the choice.

Please, not them.

If JJ puts blondes in the sequel, I hope it's not as Mudd's women. Remember, two out of three were blonde. I'd prefer shrewd lawyer Areel Shaw or Roberta Lincoln (at least she has a high IQ) over them. Given a choice beyond Chapel, Dehner is clearly a strong one. She's got it all - brains, ambition, chutzpah and a whole heck of a lot of knowledge of the human mind. With characters as conflicted as they are in the JJ-verse, they are in need of a psychiatrist on the ship. Let's make her Dehner, let's make her blonde and let's make her me.

Czerwinski out.

Nick Minecci wants to make me Dehner

This one comes as a surprise to me. Turns out some of my Twitter followers are getting in on the Dehner love. Nick is an avid Star Trek fan and co-hosts The G and T Show, a Star Trek talk show. Here's what he had to say about casting me in the next Star Trek film.

A hotshot executive bends JJ's ear

Matt knows people, and he can schmooze with the best. One day, a certain film director was walking past his office when Matt saw the perfect opportunity to put in his pitch. He's very persuasive, no?

Thanks you guys!

Hey everyone!
We're starting to build something really grand here. I have 6 endorsement videos so far and a few others in the can. The Facebook page keeps growing and I appreciate all your effort plugging me on Twitter. A few of you have asked how you can help, so I decided to make some adjustments to that particular page on here. (Visit that page for specifics) However, I just wanted to make mention that I genuinely have my hands in everything involving Make Me Dehner. From the ideas for graphics, to all the blogs and the various pictures I post, everything is my voice and pretty consistent. I'm flattered when you guys offer to help and I'm even more flattered when you blog about me, but please allow me to create my own fan pages and contact the Star Trek luminaries. The last thing I want is to harass JJ Abrams or anyone from the writing team. I believe this thing will blow up so big that we won't need to. Let's let them find out about me organically. If you contact them, you might say something that I wouldn't. I want this to be my voice and my approach to it. Let's face it, people working in the entertainment business are pretty busy, so the last thing I would want is someone getting annoyed with me. That won't get me cast. What (potentially) will get me cast is you guys clicking "like" on the Facebook page and spreading the word on Twitter to your followers, so I can garner attention instead of being perceived as pesky.

Thank you again from the bottom of my heart for all your work so far. I am humbled, truly humbled.

Czerwinski out.

Alex "The Star Trek Girl" endorsed me for Dehner on her show

Alex has a weekly YouTube show talking about all things Trek. She is super cute and really funny. I'm so flattered she mentioned me in her latest video. I'm even more impressed that she knew how to pronounce my last name without asking. She's a cool chick who loves muscle cars, Star Trek and me for Dehner. What more do you need to know to love her?

Commander Tahryn - Strong words about Mary for Dehner

When I got back from Comic-Con, there was an "extremely urgent" subspace message from Andoria. Much to my delight, the message was from Commander Tahryn (who has barely been seen since the closing of the Time Station in Las Vegas) in support of my campaign. I'm deeply touched, and I don't want anyone to upset the Commander.

Vernon Wilmer for Make Me Dehner

Vernon Wilmer is known as a cast-member of the sadly-defunct "Star Trek: The Experience." In addition to being Borg drone Seven of Sixteen, he's a filmmaker who has been putting together the definitive "Star Trek: My Experience" series about his years at the attraction. We may disagree about JJ Trek (we even appeared on a panel together at the 2010 Star Trek convention in Las Vegas to debate it), but his support of me is the real deal.

Tell Vernon how awesome his videos are here.

Details Schmetails...

One of the things I love about the early Original Series episodes, particularly the second pilot, is how much stuff they were still figuring out. Details that would become ingrained in our minds as iconic Trek just weren't in place yet. Plus, no one thought we would one day be watching this in HD Blu-Ray glory nit-picking over said details. The first obvious difference is the uniforms. In "Where No Man Has Gone Before" we see Starfleet rockin' the cowl-neck tunics with muted colors and no engineering red. Even Spock is wearing a tannish gold tunic. The rank stripe was solid in this episode and in later Trek became braided. Interestingly, their insignias at the time were different from what we know now. Elizabeth Dehner sports what would become an engineering insignia when clearly, as a doctor she should be wearing one for science. She does, however, wear the blue uniform for science/medical and damnnit women wore pants!

Another interesting inconsistency is that Dehner is listed on Memory Alpha as being 5'2 when

actress Sally Kellerman's IMDB says she is 5'10. In many shots, she appears taller than male crew members. I've met Sally Kellerman and she's definitely not a short lady. Memory Alpha most likely got this information from a closeup of the personnel file, which is clearly visible now in HD. It also lists her age at 21, which is kind of laughable considering she's a high-ranking-ship's psychiatrist. They also state her as having a PhD, which is atypical for a medical doctor unless she earned her PhD in something else. Perhaps biomedical engineering? But, when in her 21 years did she have time to do all this? Clearly, she is a super woman. No slight to Sally, but I doubt she was 21 when she filmed this episode. Let's just say she carried an air of maturity about her. In the script, Dehner was described as "past her mid-twenties, rather tall and slim, with a face that could be beautiful if she cared to make it so. She doesn't." So, if we give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe the personnel record is simply an outdated one.

This episode has some more famous inconsistencies like Kirk's middle initial on the tombstone during the big showdown between him and god-like Gary Mitchell. He's listed as James R. Kirk, not Tiberius as we have come to know him. George Takei is even credited as "Physicist." Spock still whips out a phaser pistol from "The Cage" and the incomplete transporter console without levers to energize is laughable. The list goes on and on...

Little things like that make us chuckle now, but seriously, no one thought we'd be harping on these details. Now, I have a convention costume emulating some of these inconsistencies. How much do you want to make a bet someone tries to point out that I'm inaccurate? That's what's so great about this era of TV making. They were making it up as they went along and in many ways that's what makes it more endearing.

Why Dehner?

Yes, you heard that right. I want to be Dr. Elizabeth Dehner in the new Star Trek movie. Yes, I realize this is a cheesy actors' trick, but the Hell if that will stop me. So, with all the characters in TOS you are probably wondering why Dehner? Well, let me tell you...

Every starship needs an intelligent female officer, particularly one with expertise in psychiatry (more so when there are such conflicted characters as in ST 2009). Plus, who doesn't love a perfect Hitchcock-esque blonde? Not only does Dehner possess mad psychiatry skills, she's working with ESP, which could prove to be incredibly helpful when encountering Federation enemies. Any woman who has the guts to stand up to a captain, surely deserves to be resurrected for the 2012 JJ Abrams Star Trek sequel, right?

What most people remember about Dehner (beyond the obvious mirrored contact lenses) is her being called "a walking freezer unit" by Gary Mitchell. Despite her cold exterior, she digs passionate love sonnets and can sass her superior officers like nobody else. Isn't it time that Dehner becomes immortalized as more than just a "lady doctor?" In 2012, there are no lady doctors, just doctors here. I'd like to see the kind of banter she might have with Bones should she encounter him in the new timeline. Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman can do much better than "My assignment is to study crew reaction in emergency conditions. If there was an emergency I'd be interested in how that crew reacted." I want to see Dehner own her professionalism. She doesn't need to explain her cool confidence to anyone. Phrases like this need to be updated in the JJ verse, "Woman professionals do tend to overcompensate." Own it! Own your icy exterior, Dehner!

With this new timeline she doesn't have to go out the way she did in "Where No Man Has Gone Before." Dehner was driven to see man's potential for advancement, but had the morality to see that men are inherently flawed and power hungry. She sacrificed herself and went out with the line, "I'm sorry. You can't know what it's like to be almost a god." Dehner gave her life in performance of her duty.
This is compelling stuff, people! If that doesn't sell you on the idea, we got our first glimpse of "ripped-shirt Kirk" in her episode.

This won't be the last time you'll hear me say this, but where are the blondes? The Original Series was full of blondes. In the JJ verse, all we get is one shooting out a baby, a very important baby, but still. Oh and don't think that one blonde in the background counts either.

Dehner says to Kirk of his relationship with Spock, "I understand you least of all. Gary told me that you've been friends since he joined the service, that you asked for him aboard your first command." This statement falls right into place with the new JJ verse. Let's make it happen for Dehner in 2012.

Czerwinski out.

Joseph Dickerson for Make Me Dehner
